  • What is the difference between a CPA, an EA (Enrolled Agent), and unlicensed preparers?

A CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is a professional who has met specific education and experience requirements and passed a rigorous examination to be licensed by a state board of accountancy. CPAs are qualified to provide a wide range of accounting, auditing, and tax services to businesses, individuals, and other organizations.

An EA (Enrolled Agent) is an individual who has obtained this elite status by adhering to ethical standards and who completes 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years. Enrolled Agents, like Attorneys and Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), have unlimited practice rights. Enrolled Agent status is the highest credential that the IRS awards.

An unlicensed tax preparer is someone who prepares tax returns for a fee but is not a CPA or EA. In most states, unlicensed tax preparers are not required to meet any specific education or experience requirements, and they are not subject to any professional oversight or regulation.

Working with a CPA or EA can provide peace of mind and help ensure that your tax matters are handled accurately and professionally.
